Our Story
The remarkable story of Blessed Day Cards begins in the unexpected retirement years of its founders, Roy Lessin, and longtime friend Brent Barrowcliff. In 2021, neither Roy nor Brent was looking for another venture. Roy had retired from DaySpring in 2008 and was preparing to enter his eighties. Brent had been retired since 2018 and was keeping busy with various pursuits. However, a series of unforeseen events led them down a path they never anticipated. In 2019, Roy experienced a major stroke that left him with limited mobility and unable to drive, spending most of his time at home. But by 2021, God had a surprise in store for Roy.
It began when a friend was preparing to publish a gift book for the Christmas season. Learning that the book’s initial release would be at a special home gathering, Roy decided to create a custom card to accompany the book. In a short time, the card was written, designed, and printed. Roy kept a few samples and sent the rest to his friend. The unexpected happened when a local gift shop owner read one of Roy’s sample cards and placed an order for fifty cards for her shop. Roy wanted to fulfill the order but didn’t have the inventory. Around this time, Roy’s neighbor and longtime friend and former co-worker, Brent, stopped by for a visit. Roy shared the story of the card order and posed a question:
“Brent, I need to get fifty more of these cards printed to fill the order. But printing such a small quantity is expensive.”
“How many would you need to get the best price?” Brent asked.
“One thousand,” Roy replied.
“But who would buy 1,000 cards?”
After a moment, Brent suggested, “What about a Christian school using it as a fundraiser? I know someone at the Christian school in town. I will show them the card and see what they think.” When Brent returned, he had surprising news: “They loved the card and want to do a fundraiser.”
They went straight to work to make it happen and the fundraiser was a resounding success. Though the school had a small student body, they raised over $3,000 after expenses. What Brent and Roy didn’t realize at the time was that this event marked the birth of Blessed Day Cards. In early 2022, Roy felt led by the Lord to create a card message based on John 3:16, titled So Loved. When he shared the idea with designer Lorinda Gray, she introduced a unique ten-panel design that allowed the card to be self-standing and easy to read. Brent and Roy decided to try it, and it was a huge success.
A few months later, they published another ten-panel card titled Bless You, inspired by Numbers 6:24-26. With each new card, Roy and Brent would pause to reflect and ask, “Do we really want to continue, or should we stop?” Each time, the Lord affirmed their decision with new opportunities and inspiring God-stories. The creation of this website is another chapter in our continuing story. Our motivation remains the same: to use this ministry and business as a tool to share messages of hope and faith with those in need.
